Heather has just been walking mostly because of a sore back. Add Comment I am keeping some snack items on hand in case I get hungry in between meals, such as: -celery & salsa carrot sticks -trail mix -nuts -peanut butter -whole wheat crackers -dried fruit (cranberries, raisins, banana chips) -whole fruit Paul is taking cucumber slices with him to work, as that's why he likes. Pickles are also another flavourful, low-calorie snack. I am keeping in mind the calories in these foods, as some are higher than others (such as nuts). I am making sure not to overdo it, to keep on the weight loss path. Organic celery & salsa is one of my favourite filling, satisfying snacks Came across these sayings on Facebook today, which provide good advice for healthy eating (Credit: Laura Farago). MORE VEGGIES PLEASE!!! Paul & I discussed rewarding ourselves for each 10 lbs we lose. We decided it should be some sort of an experience, not something material. As I (Heather) have now lost 12 pounds, my treat was to have a lovely pedicure (using more eco friendly nail products, of course!) My first 10 lb. weight loss reward: lovely dark purple toes! Our weight loss program involves increasing activity in the most eco friendly way possible. I spoke about our current challenge with my hair stylist recently. She told me the exercise part without using electricity is completely unrealistic. She is motivated by going to a gym and seeing other people. It seems senseless though driving to a gym, to use electrical equipment that doesn't go anywhere. Paul really enjoys and finds motivation by using his Nintendo Wii. He tried someone else's Just Dance program the other day, finding it to be alot of fun and he broke into a sweat. We produce more electricity at home than we use with our solar panels. Therefore, the energy used with the Wii is offset by renewable energy. I agreed that he could get the program for himself. He used a gift card he got for Christmas, so it almost was free. We want to be realistic and be able to get down to healthy weights, as well as maintain them. Although I did struggle with exercising using technology & electricity, if exercising using the Wii makes him happy and healthy, I think it is worthwhile. We went to an indoor playground last weekend and I ordered two coffees. They had the single serving coffee maker with the cups. I brought home the cups as we are collecting our food related trash, & opened them up. I found there was coffee grounds inside (I somehow thought it would be syrup). I composted the contents, but thought, with the popularity of these cups, that most must end up straight in the garbage. These cups produce alot of pollution, as they will release methane into the air from the landfill, which is 20X more powerful a greenhouse gas than C02, contributing to climate change. Their plastic cups will take hundreds of years to degrade in the landfill, taking up space. I'll stick to using my washable hemp coffee filter and grind my own coffee at home from now on! Individual coffee cups dissected Weigh-In Results for Sunday January 22, 2012: Heather: - 4.2 lbs Paul: - 4.0 lbs Total weight loss to date Heather: -12.2 lbs Paul: -6.0 lbs We both tried really hard this week, watching our portion sizes and increasing our exercise. And it paid off! I apologize for my late posting of the results. I am trying to post a picture with each posting, but am having difficulty with downloading my pictures. Weigh-in results for Sunday January 15: Heather: +0.2 lb Paul: +0.6 lb I was really disappointed about my weight gain this week. I tried really hard and for the most part, stuck with my plan of eating less calories and increasing activity. This week, I did have the issue of female water retention. I also missed going for a substantial walk on Friday and Saturday. On Saturday evening, we stayed over at Niagara Falls for the evening, and went to the manager's reception. I ate raw vegetables for snacks, but couldn't resist the two complimentary glasses of local wine. We had a buffet breakfast the next morning, and I ate several pieces of fruit, but did eat more than usual, also eating low-fat yogurt, vegetarian omelet and oatmeal. I also did enjoy alot of coffee (with sugar & milk) all week, and recognize I need to cut back and drink more water. I do recall in the past, a weight loss leader asking, "how much would you have gained if you were not on the program?" Much more, I can guarantee! It took me about two hours to open and compost or recycle all of the expired food items from our pantry. There are a few extra things in here, from another cupboard. that weren't in the first picture, such as old children's animal crackers that I put in to absorb the gross stuff. Below is the trash, compost and recyclables from the expired items in my pantry. Yes, I know - what a waste! On Jan. 17, Paul & I went for a baseline check-up with our doctor, Dr. G. Voros. Our results were: Age Pulse Blood pressure (BP) Body Mass Index (BMI) Target weight Heather 40 72 110/70 37.6 57-70 kg Paul 41 90 138/80 33.1 80-90 kg Normal pulse range for adults: 60-100 beats per minute Normal BP for adults: 120/80 According to the Center for Disease Control, BMI is categorized as follows: BMI Classification Below 18.5 Underweight 18.5-24.9 Normal 25.0-29.9 Overweight 30.0 & above Obese For more information on BMI, see: http://www.cdc.gov/healthyweight/assessing/bmi/adult_bmi/index.html Our doctor told us that obesity is a risk factor for: -cardiovascular disease -diabetes -arthritis -joint wear & tear (need for joint replacement) He told us that even a 10% reduction in our weight would make a difference in reducing our risk for these conditions. This is a good medium term goal for us. |
